Hate crimes targeting Canadian Muslims increased 151% in 2017. The data released by Statistics Canada on November 18, 2018 indicated a significant increase in hate crimes against most racial, religious and other minority groups. Two year later, Canadians are still reeling from the terrorist attack in Quebec that claimed six lives and injured 19 others when Alexandre Bissonnette opened fire on worshipers in a Quebec City mosque on January 29, 2017.

The Québec City mosque massacre, the worst mass murder to take place in a house of worship in Canadian history, was a shock to Canada’s multicultural utopia.

Sabha Sajjad-Hazai, a lawyer practicing in Ontario and a member of the national board of the Canadian Council of Muslim Women, was interviewed in CBC's The Fifth Estate episode Polygamy in Canada: An Open Secret and states the following:

The Kanata Muslim Association (KMA) has partnered with the Kanata United Church (KUC) to organize their third annual joint fundraising dinner for a community cause. This year they have partnered to raise funds for the Caldwell Family Centre, that runs programs for families in the Caldwell-Carlington area community, including one of the busiest food banks in the city of Ottawa. 

When engaging in charity, we often think of people in other countries around the world as the only ones in need of humanitarian help. We ignore the needs of people - specifically the Indigenous communities - in Canada. The living conditions of Indigenous communities in Canada are as bad, if not worse, than many poverty-stricken communities in underdeveloped countries.

Abdirahman Abdi was a 37 year old Somali-Canadian with mental health issues. He lived in Ottawa’s Hintonburg community at 55 Hilda Street. On July 24th 2016, following an incident at a local coffee shop where police were called, Abdirahman began running home for safety.

Six people were killed including Ibrahima Barry (aged 39), Mamadou Tanou Barry (aged 42), Khaled Belkacemi (aged 60), Aboubaker Thabti (aged 44), Abdelkrim Hassane (aged 41) and Azzedine Soufiane (aged 57)

Just a few decades ago, the only way that many Canadian Muslims could get zabiha halal slaughtered meat was to go to a local farm and slaughter it themselves. Today, the availability of halal meat from street food vendors, in supermarkets from brands such as Mina Halal, and franchises like Hero Burgers is a testament to the growth of the halal industry in Canada.

Ryan Slobojan is the founder of the Push Back the Darkness initiative aimed at encouraging all Canadians to place a light in their windows at 8 pm on Tuesday, January 29th in commemoration of the victims of the Quebec Mosque Attack and as a sign of commitment to "push back the darkness" of ignorance and hate in Canada. The initiative has also helped to support the organizing of vigils in cities across Canada.
