On July 12, 2019 Mogadishu-based Radio Dalsan reported that Somali Canadian journalist Hodan Nalayeh, 43, founder of Integration TV, was killed along with her husband in an attack on a hotel in the port city of Kismayo, Somalia that has been claimed by terrorist group Al-Shabaab. She leaves behind two young sons.

Somali Canadian Asmaa Ali represented the riding of Edmonton Griesbach, Alberta at Equal Voice’s second Daughters of the Vote gathering in early April 2019, which brought together 338 young women between the ages of 18 and 23, representing each Canadian riding and take their seat in the House of Commons during a historic sitting of the House of Commons. Whenever I think of Ramadan approaching, I get anxious, but I have never told this to anyone. Most people are expressing excitement, and here I am sitting in a pool of dread. So I have kept this feeling to myself for a long time. I know I shouldn't be feeling this way, but I can’t help it: every year Ramadan comes, I begin with anxiety, and I finish with regret.
