The federal government rejected an Ottawa Muslim centre’s application for money to improve the security of its property, one year after it was the target of a hate crime.

The Ottawa police investigated a hate crime in April 2016 at a local Islamic school which was spray-painted with hateful messages. After the incident, the Ahlul-Bayt Centre which runs the private elementary school requested federal funding to upgrade the school’s fence, gates, and doors for better security. But their request was declined.

Last month, Project Communitas presented a webinar by Professor Amarnath Amarasingam, a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council Postdoctoral Fellow at Dalhousie University’s Resilience Research Centre. The webinar addressed the Syrian conflict in the context of the rising number of foreign fighters traveling recently to the region.

Communities of different faiths gathered near Dow’s Lake on May 3rd to take part in the annual Tulipathon, a charity walk organized to raise awareness and funds for affordable housing in Ottawa.

An information session was organized Saturday at the MAC Youth Centre to explain Ontario’s updated Health and Physical Education curriculum to Muslim parents. The revised curriculum will be introduced in public schools starting September 2015.

Important figures of the past and present came to life during Iqraa School’s “Night at the Life Museum”. Dozens of students from various Arabic-speaking levels presented the life-time stories and achievements of famous personalities, from influential writers like Ibn Sina and Taha Hussein, to fictional characters like Ali Baba and Aladdin.
