The Honourable David Lametti, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, [on May 22, 2020] announced the following appointments under the judicial application process established in 2016. This process emphasizes transparency, merit, and diversity, and will continue to ensure the appointment of jurists who meet the highest standards of excellence and integrity.
Women's organizations provide essential services to our communities, supporting women and girls to be financially secure, free from violence, and able to fully participate in all aspects of our economy and society. Yet for far too long they have been chronically underfunded, underestimated and undermined.
On March 17th, the Public Safety Canada reached a settlement with Abdullah Almalki, Ahmad Abou-Elmaati and Muayyed Nureddin. An official apology was also issued in relation to the Canadian government's role in their detention and "mistreatment" abroad.
Back in Grade 5, I recall leafing through my new social studies textbook on the first week of school. My teacher at the time explained that that year, we would be learning about Canada and the history of the Canadian government. As I flipped through the pages, an image caught my eye. It was the floor plan of the House of Commons. Someone raised their hand to ask where the Prime Minister sat and our teacher pointed us to the legend describing which labels on the plan were which on the floor: Prime Minister, the Opposition, the Speaker, clerks...
