The generosity of Canadians in times of crisis is always remarkable, and their efforts are making a difference in the lives of vulnerable populations.

The Honourable Maryam Monsef, Minister of International Development and Minister for Women and Gender Equality, today announced that for every donation made by individual Canadians to Canada’s Humanitarian Coalition (includes Islamic Relief Canada) and its members between March 15 and April 14, 2019, the Government of Canada will contribute an equivalent amount to the Humanitarian Coalition, up to a maximum total of $2 million.

The minister also took the opportunity to announce an additional contribution of $4.5 million, focussing on health and food security, to other humanitarian partners responding to the crisis in southern Africa.

.

Concerted humanitarian action is required to meet the needs of populations affected by Tropical Cyclone Idai in southern Africa. The situation on the ground remains critical, and households displaced by flooding or otherwise impacted by the storm are in immediate need of food, shelter, water, sanitation, health care and protection for the most vulnerable.

Canada continues to monitor the situation and remains in close contact with all of its partners to determine the best way to respond to this crisis. In collaboration with the Humanitarian Coalition, the Matching Fund is an important mechanism that will help Canada deliver life-saving humanitarian assistance.

Quotes:

“Tropical Cyclone Idai has caused significant devastation in Malawi, Mozambique and Zimbabwe, and near 3 million people have been affected by the storm. I encourage Canadians to donate to the Cyclone Idai Matching Fund to help save lives and meet the immediate needs of affected populations.”

- Maryam Monsef, Minister of International Development and Minister for Women and Gender Equality

.

Quick facts:

The Humanitarian Coalition brings together leading aid organizations to provide Canadians with a simple and effective way to help during international humanitarian disasters.

The Government of Canada responded quickly to the impact of Tropical Cyclone Idai in Malawi, Mozambique and Zimbabwe with an announcement of $3.5 million in humanitarian assistance on March 23, 2019.

As of today, Canada has committed up to $10 million in humanitarian assistance funding to support humanitarian organizations responding to the devastation caused by Tropical Cyclone Idai in southern Africa. Canada has also donated vital relief supplies to help those in need.

The United Nations launched an appeal for over $282 million to respond to the humanitarian crisis in Mozambique.

As a result of the government’s announcement, all donations made to the @humcoalition and its member agencies from March 15 - April 14 will be matched, up to $2 million. That means every dollar will have double the impact. #CycloneIdai
