You Belong Here: Multilingual Infographics to Help Newcomers Recognize and Respond to Acts of Hate
Written by Refugee 613At the start of 2025, Refugee 613 came together with our friends at Pinecrest-Queensway Community Health Centre to talk about how we could create a tool to help newcomers stand up to hate in our communities.
They’d been awarded funding from the Safer and Vital Communities Grant, an initiative by the Ontario government to support community safety.
The Centre invited us to discuss questions many newcomers are unfortunately confronted with:
- What is a hate crime in Canada?
- Will reporting an act of hate or harassment impact my immigration status?
- How can I make a difference as a bystander when I see someone being persecuted for their identity?
The result was our first-ever three-part infographic series, created not only to answer these questions, but help communities build resilience against acts of hate and protect one another with reliable safety information.
Almost a year after we first came together, the “You Belong Here” series is now available in 20 languages, and its webpage has been visited over 8,000 times!
About the “You Belong Here” Infographics Series
Anyone can be affected by hate, and it can be frightening especially if you are a newcomer. Our ‘You Belong Here’ infographic series was created to help the community, especially newcomers, understand what hate is, what to do if you experience it and how we can support one another as a community. It is currently available in 20 languages.

This project is funded in part by the Ministry of Solicitor General of Ontario as part of the Safe and Vital Communities (SVC) grant, and the infographics were created by Refugee 613 in partnership with Pinecrest-Queensway Community Health Centre (PQCHC) with support and input from Ottawa Victim Services (OVS), Canadian Race Relations Foundation (CRRF), community organizations, faith groups, and newcomer-serving partners across Ottawa and beyond.
We are grateful for the time, insight and lived experience shared with us throughout this project.
