OTTAWA, ON, June 5, 2023. In response to the combined impact of conflict, climate and hunger in parts of east Africa, along with the ripple effects of the conflict in Sudan, leading Canadian aid agencies – working together as the Humanitarian Coalition – are raising funds to rush assistance to people in need.

Banks in Canada have pledged support for a Canadian Red Cross appeal to help provide immediate relief and help to those affected by the devastating earthquakes in Türkiye and Syria that have collapsed thousands of buildings, killed more than 11,000 people and counting, and have left hundreds of thousands seeking shelter.

The number of Canadians donating to charity—as a percentage of all tax filers—is at the lowest point in 20 years, finds a new study published by the Fraser Institute, an independent, non-partisan Canadian public policy think-tank.
