(Ottawa - May 5, 2018) The National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM), a prominent civil liberties & advocacy organization, welcomes the decision by Ontario PC Party leader Doug Ford to remove Tanya Granic Allen as the PC candidate in the riding of Mississauga Centre.
Mr. Ford dismissed Ms. Granic Allen earlier today over what a party statement referred to as her “irresponsible” characterization of “certain issues and people”.
“The dismissal of Ms. Granic Allen is long overdue given the Islamophobic and bigoted comments attributed to her. There is no place for that kind of intolerance in Canadian politics,” says NCCM Communications Coordinator Leila Nasr.
Granic Allen had previously made highly offensive remarks about a number of minority communities in Canada. This included referring to Muslim women who choose to veil their faces on the basis of their sincerely-held religious belief as “bank robbers”.
“While the NCCM welcomes this decision to remove Ms. Granic Allen, we remain deeply concerned by the creeping influence of bigotry into our politics. We urge political leaders and candidates of all parties to firmly and unequivocally condemn any and all hateful rhetoric that would seek to divide our communities for the sake of political gain,” says NCCM Executive Director Ihsaan Gardee.
