A group of 105 Afghan refugees who are currently living in Canada fear for the safety of their family members who have been left behind in Afghanistan.

Afghan Canadian Sadaf Parweez recently made headlines in Durham region after graduating from UOIT. An Afghan refugee, Sadaf has overcome the obstacles many newcomers to Canada face when trying to pursue their education.

Muslim Link interviewed the recent graduate about her educational journey after coming to Canada as a refugee.

Roya Shams, 20, has received wide spread attention in Canadian media since she was supported to come to Canada from Afghanistan by Michael Cooke  and Paul Watson  of the Toronto Star after the assassination her father, a police officer and outspoken voice for women’s equality. Roya’s life was in danger because she was also a vocal advocate for women’s education. Since coming to Canada, it has not been safe for her to return to Kandahar to see her family.

On Friday, May 10th, members of the Carleton University  Afghan Students' Association (ASA) organized a Mother's Day celebration to recognize the efforts of Afghan Canadian female educators who are actively involved within Ottawa's schools, from language school teachers to daycare workers. They also raised over $1000 in proceeds for Mirman Baheer, an Afghan organization that supports women writers and poets.

Kandahar-The Fighting Season is a new exhibit that is sure to garner a lot of attention from those with an interest in Afghanistan.

The exhibition at the War Museum features sixteen intense, some even haunting photographs taken between 2006 and 2001, during the war in Afghanistan.

Award-winning photographer Louie Palu accompanied Canadian soldiers to Kandahar Province in Southern Afghanistan. He captured their world of firefights and exhausting patrols in some of the most dangerous districts of Kandahar (said to be the heartland of the insurgency).
