On January 29th, 2017, six Muslims were murdered at the Islamic Cultural Centre of Quebec City, a mosque in the Sainte-Foy neighbourhood of Quebec City, Canada.

Six people were killed including Ibrahima Barry (aged 39), Mamadou Tanou Barry (aged 42), Khaled Belkacemi (aged 60), Aboubaker Thabti (aged 44), Abdelkrim Hassane (aged 41) and Azzedine Soufiane (aged 57)

Nineteen others were injured, including Aymen Derbali, who is now paralyzed.

.

A number of events and campaigns have been launched in order to remember the victims of this attack and address continuing issues of hatred and violence.

The Green Square Campaign

The National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM), Islamic Relief Canada (IRC), and Islamic Cultural Centre of Quebec City are asking all Canadians, and all Canadian Muslims, to wear a green square from January 27-January 29 as part of the Green Square Campaign. According to NCCM, "The Green Square Campaign is designed to raise awareness about what happened on January 29, 2017, remember the victims, and support their families. The green square represents the green carpets of the Quebec City mosque, which were soaked in the blood of our brothers that night. It symbolizes the fact that the deceased are, God willing, in a garden green, in a better place since they left us that night."

Financial Support for the Families of the Victims of the Quebec Mosque Shooting

Islamic Relief Canada (IRC) is calling upon community members to donate monthly to a Zakat-eligible fund to support the victims of the Quebec Mosque Attack, including the widows and orphans of those who were killed. According to IRC, "These six women continue to live the real life consequences of hate and violence, as they became single mothers and the sole breadwinner of their families on that tragic night. To honour the legacy of those we lost, we are committed to providing sustainable monthly financial support so that these mothers can build a better future for their children."

The Mosque: A Community's Struggle Documentary

Directed by Afghan Canadian Ariel Nasr, The Mosque: A Community's Struggle is a documentary that will be screening across Quebec to mark the third anniversary of the Quebec Mosque Shooting. About the Film, "The Mosque: A Community's Struggle is an intimate portrait of the resilient Muslim community of Ste-Foy, Québec, as they struggle to survive and shift the narrative of what it means to be a Muslim, one year after the devastating attack that took the lives of six of their members. As the world moves on, this small mosque and its community fights Islamophobia, harassment and hate speech. How will the community heal and how will they stop the rhetoric that threatens to precipitate further violence?"

.

You can follow the documentary's Facebook page here

For those of you who cannot attend a screening but who wish to view the film, you can watch it online on CBC Gem here.

Muslim Awareness Week

Several events are taking place from January 25 to January 31 in Montreal, Quebec as part of the second annual Muslim Awareness Week aimed at encouraging better connections between Muslim and non-Muslim communities and addressing the reality of Islamophobia in Quebec.

To learn more about the week and its events, follow the Muslim Awareness Week Facebook Page.

Vigils, lectures, film screenings, and gatherings are taking place across Canada to commemorate the Quebec Mosque Shooting and to discuss the issue of hate, Islamophobia or anti-Muslim bigotry, and violence in Canada.

Muslim Link is compiling a list of these events. If you would like to add an event taking place in your city, please email us at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
