Pakistani Canadian twins, Maryam and Nivaal Rehman, founders of the non-profit organization, "The World with MNR", have recently released the documentary, Destined to Sour,  about girls' education in Pakistan.

The following is the description of the documentary: "Destined to Soar, is the story of twin activists Maryam and Nivaal Rehman and their return to Pakistan, where they have been inspiring girls to go to school for the past 10 years. Motivated by their grandmother who donated land to have a girls’ school built in their village, the two begin their journey reconnecting with the children there. They conduct numerous workshops and arrange activities to hear the children’s stories and inspire them to continue their education. Following this, the twins travel across Pakistan to determine the status of girls' education in the country overall, including the barriers girls face when going to school and work that is being done to overcome them. The story unfolds with the perspectives of various industry leaders, school children, and grassroots activists, that are displayed through interviews, workshops, and school visits. It shatters stereotypes about Pakistan, a country often misunderstood by the media, by noting that although problems exist, considerable efforts are being made to resolve them."

You can watch the trailer for the documentary below (It may take a few moments for it to load from YouTube).

In this documentary, one of the barriers hindering girls' access to education in Pakistan that the sisters explore is the impact of parents struggling with drug addiction. The documentary includes an interview Pakistani psychiatrist Dr. Sadaqat Ali about access to drug rehabilitation in the country.

Maryam and Nivaal hope to that community members will organize screenings of the documentary in order to raise awareness about the issue of access to girls' education in the country, while also shattering stereotypes about Pakistan. They have produced a guide for those interested in screening the documentary which you can find online here.
