Ottawa and Mississauga Area Imams Play Soccer to Fundraise for Sports for Youth with Disabilities
Written by Deen Support ServicesWhat do Imams and soccer have in common?
They are coming together to raise money for youth with disabilities!
Everyone should be able to access sports and recreation activities- but for youth with disabilities, this is not always the case.
Sharing the vision that children and youth with and without disabilities all have the right to play, Deen Support Services and Muslim Youth Soccer League (MYSL) have joined together to develop AccessKix.
AccessKix is a community based soccer program that includes modified training sessions and games for children and youth with disabilities.
The program is designed to bring the opportunity of learning and playing soccer to everyone in the community, who has a developmental or physical disability.
Imans in the Greater Toronto Area are coming together to fundraise for AccessKix at the Third Annual Imams Charity Soccer Game. Imams are trying to fundraise $1000 each. The game will take place on November 30th in Mississauga, Ontario. (Click here for event details). Their goal is to fundraise $25,000 for the Ottawa Chapter of Deen Support Services. The official referee for the Third Annual Imams Charity Soccer Game will be Ugandan Canadian Ed Kiwa. Ed Kiwa is a member of Street Soccer Canada, a non-profit charity founded in Peel Region, that strives to help people struggling with homelessness thrive through sport in cities across Canada. In 2012, Ed Kiwa represented Canada at the Homeless World Cup in Mexico City. To listen to a 2015 CBC interview with Ed Kiwa, click here.
Also this year, for the first time, Imams and Muslim youth organizers in Ottawa are also coming together to play soccer and raise funds for the Ottawa Chapter of Deen Support Services with the support of the University of Ottawa Muslim Students Association (UOMSA) and the Carleton University Muslim Students Association (CUMSA). They hope to raise $1000 each. Their game is taking place on November 30, in Ottawa, Ontario. (Click here for event details). Their goal is to fundraise $25,000 for the Ottawa Chapter of Deen Support Services. Community members are encouraged to attend to watch the game but as seating is limited, it is recommended that you bring your own chair.
