Local Somali Canadian university students have come together to organize a fundraising iftar to raise awareness and money to help people impacted by the drought and famine in Somalia. The iftar takes place on June 7.

1. What is the Somali Aid Campaign (SAC)?

The Somali Aid Campaign is a group of Somali-Canadian students that have a common goal of helping those in need whom otherwise wouldn't have anyone attending to their issues. We as the Somali Aid Campaign are particularly concerned with the current drought/famine in Somalia and the issues that they have the potential to aggravate.

.

2. How did your group come together to organize this event?

With the month of Ramadan upon us, we decided to hold an iftar to not only raise funds for families in need but to highlight the importance of giving charity during this blessed month. We also wanted to make the event family friendly and therefore have a program that could be entertaining and informative for all members of the community.

3. Tell us about your team?

Anything interesting or distinctive about you? We are a collective of university students from both University of Ottawa and Carleton University who have come together with the common goal of raising as much money as possible to provide drought relief in Somalia. Each member brings valuable skill sets, knowledge and experience to the table. The different perspectives ensure that the Somali Aid Campaign never runs out of resources and ideas on how to continue aid in Somalia. And as Somali diaspora youth, the responsibility we feel towards our community back home guarantees that we will continue this aid for as long as we possibly can.

4. Why should people consider attending your fundraiser iftar? How are you ensuring the maximum amount of funds are going to the cause? What is interesting about the event in terms of entertainment or an opportunity to socialize?

As we are observing the month of Ramadan, it is a time of great reflection and spiritual development. It is also the month where we are encouraged to increase all acts of worship, including giving Sadaqah. Our Iftaar Fundraiser provides the Muslim community in Ottawa with an opportunity to give back and gain maximum rewards from Allah (SWT). Our event will be headlined by vibrant and talented youth, from speakers to comedy sketch performers, all committed to making the night memorable for all age groups.

.

Admission tickets are being sold for $15-$20, and 100% of the proceeds will go directly to beneficiaries in Somalia. We will also have various donation boxes available to those who would like to further contribute to the cause. All SAC events are paid for out of our own pockets and we avoid using services that would take a portion of the funds. We would like to add, the Fundraiser Iftaar is not exclusive to Muslims, as we encourage everyone to come out and contribute to the efforts being made to raise funds.

5. Is there anything else you would like to add?

Please visit and like our Facebook page “Somali Aid Campaign” for more information on upcoming projects and events!

We will be selling tickets for the Ramadan Iftar for 20$ adults and 15$ for youth (under 17).

Somali Aid Campaign

We are a group of Somali-Canadian youth that are concerned with the current drought in Somalia and the issues that the drought has the potential to aggravate. We were brought together with the common goal of raising awareness regarding this situation and raising funds for relief.

We will be organizing multiple events with the intention of raising awareness of the drought in Somalia and raising funds to supply clean water to drought-affected villages. We encourage you to like our page, spread the word and get involved! If you would like to be a volunteer, or want to find out how else you can help, please email us at SomaliAidCampaign@gmail.com
