Canada's First Mosque Opens Its Doors to Shelter Edmonton's Vulnerable Citizens
Written by Al Rashid MosqueEdmonton — With the Extreme Weather Response activation, Al Rashid Mosque will provide a safe and warm shelter to Edmonton’s most vulnerable citizens in partnership with the City of Edmonton and numerous community volunteers.
The Mosque will open its doors from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. daily, continuing for as long as the weather activation remains in effect.
During this period, the Al Rashid Mosque will offer shelter, as well as hot meals, clothing, and essential supplies to ensure that guests remain safe and warm throughout the night. Staff and volunteers will be available on-site and overnight to offer additional support as needed.
Noor Al-Henedy, Chair of the Al Rashid Mosque Board, emphasized the community spirit driving this initiative, “At the heart of our faith is a commitment to compassion and community care. By opening our doors, we are not just offering a shelter but fostering a sense of solidarity and support. The challenges faced by our homeless citizens require us to come together as a community to provide a network of support and safety.”
The Al Rashid Mosque urges all residents near Edmonton and its surrounding areas to direct individuals in need of shelter to their location. Additional assistance and transportation to the nearest shelters are available by calling 211.
