BC Muslim Organizations Calling For Action About Anthony Koch and The Conservative Party of British Columbia

As organizations committed to justice, equity, and the safety of marginalized communities, we stand in alignment in calling for the BC Conservative Party to immediately address the series of remarks made by Anthony Koch, Spokesperson for the BC Conservative Party. If appropriate steps of accountability are not taken, we do not understand how he can remain as spokesperson.

Anthony Koch has repeatedly made what we view as misogynistic, divisive, and inflammatory remarks, targeting Muslims, Sikhs, and women of color. Some disturbing examples of his social media activity include (but are not limited to) telling an elected official to go back to her country, suggesting that the “Khalistani crew” do not support Canadian Jews, suggesting that anti-Semites are most likely to be Pakistani, using derogatory slurs towards women, including calling a Sikh woman an extremely vulgar term, and making other inappropriate suggestions online.

This sort of behaviour is not only unacceptable for a person representing a political party, but it also fuels polarization at a time when Canadians need to come together. These actions contradict Canadian values of equality, dignity, and respect that are foundational to a just society. It is our understanding that Koch's offensive tweets was a factor in his previous termination as a freelance contributor at CBC’s Power and Politics, thus further highlighting the severity of his conduct.

Despite multiple attempts to reach out to John Rustad and the BC Conservative Party to address these concerns, there has unfortunately been no response. Therefore, we are now publicly urging the party to take immediate action.

We, the undersigned organizations, call on the BC Conservative Party to demonstrate its commitment to all Canadians by holding accountable those who violate the values of respect and inclusivity.
