The Canadian Muslim Women’s Institute Inc. (CMWI) is a non-profit organization founded in 2006. Its goal is to promote and empower refugee and newcomer women and their families socially, economically and spiritually. CMWI is a direct service delivery organization serving its members through a variety of programs and services that cater to the needs of immigrants and refugees. We also train newcomers in kitchen skills, helping them start careers. Many go on to join our team, giving back to the community while building their futures. We are actively looking for an experienced Culinary Operations Assistant, that can demonstrate adequate knowledge and understanding of a busy kitchen.
Position Summary:
The Operations Assistant will support the Culinary Team Leader in kitchen operations, including cooking and baking for catering orders, preparing meals for clients, taking orders, coordinating with suppliers, inventory tracking, purchase orders preparation, food cost tracking, and any other kitchen responsibilities assigned by the supervisor. This role is essential in ensuring timely orders and meals preparation, maintaining kitchen standards, and contributing to a positive, team-oriented kitchen environment. They must be able to think on their feet, make sound snap decisions and come up with creative concepts within the program. They are comfortable taking on any task in the kitchen and are familiar with the operation of all kitchen equipment and assist in leading the daily operations.
The Operations Assistant will report directly to the Culinary Team Leader and represent them in their absence.
What You’ll Do:
- Collaborate with our Team Leader/Chef to execute menus that align with our standards and the need of our clients
- Manage daily kitchen operations, ensuring consistency, quality, and cleanliness in all aspects of food preparation
- Oversee inventory management, including food ordering, waste reduction, and alignment with cost-control measures
- Assist with daily and weekly admin duties: purchase order forms, inventory tracking, cost sheets, staff check-ins, etc.
- Ensure all deadlines are met for food preparation and delivery, with a focus on efficiency and accuracy
- Proactively prepare for future orders to ensure seamless kitchen operations
- Maintain the highest levels of food safety, hygiene, and cleanliness, ensuring compliance with all health and safety regulations
- Help in delivering food packages to clients as required
- Report any problems or issues immediately to the Team Leader/ Chef, ensuring timely communication and resolution
- Uphold organizational standards by maintaining an orderly and efficient kitchen environment
- Demonstrate the physical capability to perform the job, including lifting heavy objects and standing for extended periods.
What We’re Looking For:
We are looking for someone dependable, organized, and experienced and knowledgeable in kitchen operations (cooking and baking) who can support the Team Leader/ Chef behind the scenes and keep things flowing smoothly. A flexible team player, who jumps into prep, packaging, or event support when needed. If you’re into social media or content, there’s room to help with behind-the-scenes photos, planning, and posting. Strong leadership skills with the ability to work as a team as well as with minimal supervision. Excellent communication and organizational skills with a focus on efficiency. Ability to thrive under pressure while maintaining attention to detail and a positive attitude. Knowledge of inventory management, food costing, and kitchen financials
Must have:
- High School education, culinary arts diploma; college and/or university degree – preferred
- Minimum 2 years supervisory experience
- Minimum 2 years solid experience in a professional kitchen (cooking and baking)
- Knowledge of kitchen admin: inventory, purchase orders, and food cost tracking
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Excellent comprehension and literacy required
- Proficient in Excel and Word
- Driving license
- A clear criminal record check and child abuse registry
Job Type:
Term position (3 months with potential of renewal) Full-time 40 hours per week, 8 hours shift: 8:00am - 4:00pm
The successful candidate must be prepared to undergo a Satisfactory Criminal Record and Child Abuse Registry check.
Expected start date: April 7, 2025
Salary: $20.00 per hour
Terms of Employment: Full Time Term Position (40hr/week)
Contract ends June 30, 2025 (with a potential extension upon funding)
