Honouring a Legacy of Service, Faith, and Advocacy

Innalillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un.

Our community has lost a beloved leader and mentor in Br. Omar Zia. He leaves behind his wife and two daughters.

.

In his short time with us, Omar stood as a pillar of the Muslim community in the Greater Toronto Area.

As a servant of Allah, his sincere work has had a profound impact on countless individuals and families.

Through his work with the Peel District School Board and numerous other organizations, Br. Omar exemplified the values of compassionate service, meaningful change, and Prophetic adab, truly following in the footsteps of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

A Trailblazer in Community Building and Advocacy

Omar was a trailblazer who championed community building, equity, and accessibility for Muslim youth and families. He played a pivotal role in combating Islamophobia within the school system and advocating for students' rights to practice their faith. Omar’s legacy is a testament to the power of education and advocacy in shaping a better future.

How You Can Contribute

Your contribution to this initiative will support Omar’s family, sadaqah jaariyah projects (ongoing charity), and ensure that Br. Omar's community efforts continue. JazakumAllah khairun.

What community leaders have to say about Br. Omar Zia

"Omar was the unsung hero of our community, tirelessly working behind the scenes to empower students, support Islamic schools, and mentor the next generation, leaving behind huge shoes to fill and a legacy of kindness, compassion, and dedication." - Ibrahim Hindy, Religious Director Yaqeen Canada and Imam at Tawheed Community Center

.

“I had the privilege of witnessing Br. Omar Zia's remarkable ability to connect with our volunteers, particularly the youth, in ways that were truly unparalleled. His talks were not just motivational; they were transformative, leaving a lasting impact on everyone who attended. I have never come across anyone who could inspire and resonate with young people so instantly and profoundly. His energy, wisdom, and genuine care uplifted our teams, creating a sense of purpose and belonging that fueled their passion for service. Br. Omar’s legacy will forever be a cornerstone of the spirit we aim to foster at MuslimFest and beyond.” - Tariq Syed, Director of Events, MuslimFest & Future-Forward Community Strategist

“Omar Zia was a true champion of diversity equity and inclusion. He worked hard to ensure that every child belonged, including Muslim kids in the public education system, and did his part to combat islamophobia. He was an important ally to me when I served as the Executive Director of the Muslim Council of Peel.“ - Rabia Khedr, CEO of DEEN Support Services, National Director of Disability Without Poverty

“In the passing of Br. Omar Zia, we have lost not just a leader but a beacon of light and service whose impact transcended boundaries of faith and geography. His life was a testament to compassion, wisdom, and a relentless drive to uplift humanity. May his legacy inspire us to continue his work and may Allah grant him the highest place in Jannah. Ameen” -Kaisar Galib Hossain, Founder & CEO, HAPPY STRONG FAMILY

“His passing has left a deep indescribable void, yet a desire to carry forward what he left behind. May Allah have mercy upon him, forgive him for his shortcomings, and ease the pain of his family. May Allah enter him into the highest levels of al-Firdaus with the best of those who walked this earth.” - Yasin Ahmed, Youth Mentor & Khateeb

"Br. Omar Zia was profoundly generous with his time, knowledge, and energy. He devoted himself to empowering youth, supporting families, and mentoring colleagues. He possessed an “abundance mindset”. He was a river, not a reservoir. Br. Omar Zia’s life was a powerful reminder that one person, driven by faith and purpose, can change the lives of thousands. Let Br. Omar Zia’s story inspire us to rise above complacency, to act with courage and conviction, and to dedicate our lives to causes greater than ourselves" - Taha Ghayyur, Human Rights Advocate & Writer & Khateeb

.

"Omar Zia was a trailblazer in our community and beyond. He championed causes that he embodied in his interactions everyday. His legacy will be honoured by the lives he touched." - Yaseen Poonah, Founder Naseeha Mental Health
