Statement from the Office of City Councillor Raj Dhaliwal on Police Brutality on Student Encampment for Palestine at the University of Calgary
Written by Office of City Councillor Raj Dhaliwal
May 10, 2024 Calgary, Alberta — As a representative of many Muslims, peace loving people, and a proud University of Calgary graduate, City Councillor Raj Dhaliwal feels compelled to speak out about the recent incidents that unfolded at the University of Calgary campus.
Councillor Dhaliwal and his office have received many inquiries from concerned residents regarding the disturbing events that transpired last night.
"Universities are intended to be safe spaces where students can freely express their thoughts and ideas," said Councillor Dhaliwal. "In my opinion, the events that unfolded at my alma mater last night have clearly demonstrated a failure to uphold these principles."
While specific details surrounding the police response remain unclear, Councillor Dhaliwal is looking forward to hearing directly from Calgary Police Service. The Councillor expressed his disappointment, particularly in light of the lack of action taken against other illegal encampments across the city.
"Councillor Dhaliwal emphasized that freedom of expression and the right to voice one's opinion are fundamental democratic values we must all embrace, support, and learn while at universities. I urge authorities to handle these situations with care and ensure that students have safe spaces to engage in peaceful dialogue."
Councillor Dhaliwal reiterated his call from November of last year for a ceasefire in Gaza and the middle east, recognizing the broader impact of conflicts on the global stage and the importance of peace.
The Councillor and his office will continue to advocate for the rights of students and all residents to express their beliefs safely and responsibly.
