National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM): The Motion for Palestine PASSED in Parliament
Written by National Council of Canadian MuslimsToday, as we inch closer to the midway point of this holy month, so many of our hearts continue to ache as the people of Gaza and Palestine continue to face renewed invasion and bombardment.
Given the urgency of the situation, we have been hard at work to push the latest motion for justice in Palestine, which Parliament voted on today.
Thanks to your support and prayers, Parliament successfully passed this motion, thus committing to major issues in the fight for Palestinian human rights—further than any other G-7 nation.
With today’s milestone vote, Parliament has committed to:
- Calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza
- Allowing unimpeded humanitarian aid to Gaza
- Stopping the transfer and further authorization of arms exports to Israel
- Banning all illegal settlers from Canada
- Recognizing the place of International Criminal Court, as well as the Court itself
- Resuming funding for UNRWA
These amount to major steps forward in the fight for Palestine, as far as Canada is concerned.
We have the New Democratic Party (NDP), to thank for proposing this path-breaking motion. They showed tremendous courage and resolve in this process to orient Canada’s commitment to Palestinian human rights. They deserve the credit that comes with pushing for such commitments.
And though the Liberal Party unhelpfully altered some aspects of the NDP’s original motion—including the outright recognition of the State of Palestine—they still voted for the final version.
We share in the disappointment that an outright affirmation of Palestinian statehood was not made, but we will not stop advocating for it.
Nonetheless, that the Liberals, NDP, Bloc Quebecois, and Green Party, all voted “yes” on policy positions like a weapon sales ban, along with the other items on this motion, amounts to a massive step forward.
We couldn’t have done any of this without you. Thanks to your support, NCCM's team worked night and day to support and push this motion among our elected leaders.
Now, we won. There is much work to be done. To push further for Palestinian human rights.
