National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM): Statement on the Terrorism Conviction of the London Family Attacker
Written by National Council of Canadian MuslimsAs Ramadan quickly approaches, our community has come together more than ever to stand for justice and accountability both at home and abroad.
We Will Never Forget #OurLondonFamily
For many years, our community has experienced the sharp end of white supremacy and systemic Islamophobia. This threat to our safety was highlighted by the June 2021 London terror attack that took the lives of four beautiful members of #OurLondonFamily
Today, our team, along with the loved ones of #OurLondonFamily and members of the community, gathered at the Ontario Superior Court in London as the white supremacist attacker was convicted of terrorism, and sentenced to life in prison.
This is the first time that a white nationalist act of violence was designated as an act of terrorism.
It has been a tough journey. The family had to sit through a gruelling trial that included terrible details and offensive remarks and questions made by the defense. Now that it is over, we hope a process and healing can begin.
Nothing will ever replace #OurLondonFamily, but we hope a united Canada can be formed to combat systemic and violent Islamophobia.
Our future depends on this. Our future depends on you. We will never stop standing with #OurLondonFamily. We will never stop standing with you.
