National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM) 2024 Ontario Advocacy Day

This Monday, community leaders from across Ontario gathered with our team at Queen’s Park in Toronto for our 2024 Ontario Advocacy Day, right before the third anniversary of the tragedy that took #OurLondonFamily.

During a time of rising Islamophobic and anti-Palestinian hate crimes, we advocated for things like passing robust anti-hate legislation akin to the Our London Family Act, speaking out in support of free and peaceful expression when it comes to the atrocities in Gaza.

Speaking out against hate of all forms, including anti-Palestinian racism and Islamophobia, isn’t just the right of every person in Ontario—it is the duty of every Canadian.

We are only able to do this with your support. Together, we will accomplish so much more.

Asalamu alaikum / Peace be upon you

This is never an easy time of year for our community.

For the third year, our hearts and thoughts inevitably drift towards the memories of those we lost to the terror attack that cut down #OurLondonFamily.

Four members of the same Muslim family, three generations, falling victim to Islamophobic hate. Their passing signified a turning point for Canada. It represented a permanent change to the way so many of us saw our place in this country.

It is impossible to ignore, and so we honour them. We honour them by making sure that there is light and change that comes out of their tragedy.

This week, we tried to put this commitment into action.

In order to make sure that our elected leaders in Ontario prioritize the fight against Islamophobic hate, dozens of community leaders from across the province gathered with our team at Queen’s Park in Toronto for our 2024 Ontario Advocacy Day, right before the third anniversary of the tragedy that took #OurLondonFamily.

During a time of rising Islamophobic and anti-Palestinian hate crimes, we made sure to focus our efforts on pushing the Government of Ontario, along with all Members of Provincial Parliament, to get to real change to protect our communities.

We advocated for things like passing robust anti-hate legislation akin to the Our London Family Act, as well as speaking out in support of free and peaceful expression when it comes to the atrocities in Gaza.

These issues have only increased in number for the past three years. This is unacceptable. The past few months have been filled with fear and reprisal for those in our community trying to speak out against hate. This cannot go on. We have now put these issues on the table. We will hold those in power to account.

We are indebted to our community advocates who showed up to put in the necessary work for real change.

We are only able to do this with your support. Together, we will accomplish so much more.

Jazakhallah,

Stephen Brown, CEO of the National Council of Canadian Muslims
