Muslim Council of Calgary Condemns Excessive Use of Force by Calgary Police Service
Written by Muslim Council of CalgaryCalgary, 2024-05-10 The Muslim Council of Calgary stands united in condemning the recent actions of the Calgary Police Service, which employed excessive force against peaceful protesters advocating for an end to Israel’s aggression in Palestine. As advocates for justice and human rights, we express our deep concern over this violation of fundamental rights.
Peaceful Protest and Charter Rights
The right to peaceful protest is a cornerstone of our democratic society, enshrined in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The use of disproportionate force undermines the very principles we hold dear. We call upon all authorities to respect citizens’ right to express their views without fear of violence or intimidation.
A Call for Accountability
Omar El-Hajjar, Chairman of the Muslim Council of Calgary, expressed his dismay: “We are disgusted and appalled by this display of brutality. Many of our members have fled oppressive regimes where freedom of speech and expression were suppressed. Witnessing police employ excessive force against peaceful student protesters within 24 hours of a peaceful demonstration is deeply troubling.”
Immediate Resignation and Accountability
We demand the immediate resignation of Chief Mark Neufeld and insist that those responsible for authorizing the egregious use of force also step down. The senior leadership of the Calgary Police Service is no longer welcome on our premises. Their return will be considered only once a new chief is in place. This incident underscores a profound failure in leadership that cannot be ignored.
Committed to Peace and Justice
The Muslims of Calgary remain steadfast in our commitment to peace, justice, and the protection of human rights—both locally and globally. We stand in unwavering solidarity with all communities advocating for their rights. Acts of violence and oppression must be called out wherever they occur.
