Member of Parliament Chandra Arya's Raises Concerns about Crisis in Sudan in Parliament
Written by CAMFNOn February 9th 2024, MP Chandra Arya raised concerns about the situation of Sudan in the House of Commons.
MP Chandra Arya had previously sponsored a petition demanding Canada support human rights and humanitarian assistance for Sudan which was signed by over 4480 signatures.
On February 9th, MP Chandra Arya stated: “Mr. Speaker, The war in Sudan has been killed over 13,000 people and about 33,000 injured. About 1.5 million Sudanese have fled the country as refugees. Few days back The World Food Programme said it is receiving reports of people dying of starvation in Sudan and almost eight million people had been forced from their homes by the conflict. Health infrastructure has been destroyed. About 19 million children are currently out of school. We have a moral obligation to address the catastrophic humanitarian crisis in Sudan in a significant way. Canada, with its expertise, can actively participate in the forums that deal with the situation and provide support. Canada can also appoint a special envoy to closely monitor and follow up the developments. Thank you Mr. Speaker.”
