Islamophobic Attack This Morning at the Toronto Islamic Centre
Written by Toronto Islamic CentreToronto - November 18, 2023
We are sharing the below statement from the Toronto Islamic Centre issued today:
"This morning, after the dawn prayer, an individual came to the Toronto Islamic Centre where he assaulted worshippers and attempted to vandalize the centre as well. The attacker hurled a large rock at a congregant, tried to smash through the windows, as well as kick and strike worshippers.
While doing so, he uttered a number of Islamophobic slurs and threats, including about Muslim terrorists, how he was there to “finish the job” and how he was Israeli.
We are in touch and working with the Toronto Police.
This is not the first time that TIC has faced Islamophobia. Years ago, we received threats that someone was coming to commit another Christchurch attack at our centre.
We want to be clear: we will not be intimidated.
While our first priority is to ensure the ongoing safety of worshippers, we need to see long term change to fight all forms of hate, including Islamophobia. We would like to encourage even more worshippers to come for Fajr prayers and take a stand against all forms of hatred."
