Freedom of Expression Violations at Pro-Palestinian Demos in Ottawa: How You Can Help
Written by Palestinian Youth Movement OttawaLike you, we refuse to stay silent in the face of Israel's ongoing genocide in Gaza, its horrific attacks on Palestinians in the West Bank, and its bombing of Lebanon.
Starting December 23rd, 2023, City of Ottawa Bylaw agents imposed fines of $490 on any participant using a speaker or megaphone at our protests.
A total of 12 tickets were issued on December 23rd and 30th, 2023, accumulating fines amounting to $5880, directly infringe upon our Charter right to freedom of expression.
This assault on freedom of expression isn't solely anti-Palestinian and racist-it is also a direct assault on the democratic, union, and civil rights of anyone who protests in Ottawa, irrespective of their community or political affiliation.
The community members who were ticketed, including members of the Palestinian Youth Movement, Labour for Palestine, and Independent Jewish Voices, have secured legal representation and will be contesting these tickets in court.
How Can You Support
Oppression invariably sparts the resistance of those advocating for freedom and justice.
Over the past two weeks, numerous community members have extended moral, financial, and legal support to those ticketed.
Community pressure is making a difference.
