Action Alert #54
Canada - National
All Provinces and Territories Must Intervene on Quebec's Bill 21
The Government of Quebec is now contemplating banning all prayers in public, like in parks. It would be part of a larger expansion of Bill 21, the infamous law that already bans so many public servants in the province from wearing religious symbols at work.
Send a letter today telling the Premiers and leaders of Canada to stand up against Bill 21 and to intervene as the Supreme Court of Canada rules on the law this year.
In Quebec, an expansion of Bill 21 likely means the banning of all religious attire, like hijabs and kippahs, in schools, as well as the blocking of public servants from celebrating religious holidays.
“The government here is in the process of passing a law that takes away the rights of its own citizens,” said NCCM CEO Stephen Brown, “based on nothing more than unconfirmed allegations and anti-Muslim conspiracy theories.”
Make no mistake: these politically self-serving moves by the Coalition Avenir Quebec government (who are experiencing low poll numbers) are the greatest threat to Canadians’ civil liberties today.
They are a threat to our rights as enshrined in the constitution. They are facilitating second-class citizenship in Quebec.
Send a letter today to ensure that our leaders understand the stakes. It is time for al elected leaders in Canada to stand up and intervene against Bill 21.
