Hannah Dick is an Assistant Professor in Communication and Media Studies at Carleton University, in the School of Journalism and Communication. Her work brings together media studies with the study of religion. She holds a PhD in Communication from the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) and an MA in Religion and Modernity from Queen’s University. Prior to joining Carleton she was a Visiting Assistant Professor at New York University (NYU), in the Department of Media, Culture, and Communication.
The Québec government is proposing a secularism law to prohibit any new public servants in a position of authority — including teachers, lawyers and police officers — from wearing religious symbols while at work.
One day after the surprise victory of the Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ) in the recent Québec election, Premier-elect François Legault told a news conference that he plans to invoke the notwithstanding clause to finally pass legislation that will ban religious symbols for employees in “positions of authority” throughout the province.
