About Speaker:
Dr Yakoob Ahmed is an academic specialising in late Ottoman history. He is a PhD graduate of the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London and currently teaches Islamic history at Istanbul University. His research focuses on Muslim intellectual thought in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, Islamic constitutionalism, identity, nationalism and collective memory construction. He has taught Turkish politics and history at Istanbul Shehir University, has taught Islamic history at the Theology department at Istanbul University for the last 8 years, and is currently a visiting fellow at the University of Tokyo where he is looking at the impact of legal transformation of the Ottoman Empire on Meiji Japan, Qing China and the Malaysian Kingdom of Johor.
