This workshop offers practical tools to unpack the assumptions & fears that underpin Islamophobia in "inclusive" and "progressive" spaces.
Chelby Marie Daigle will be mining her own personal experience of being the target of Islamophobia in a "feminist" workspace and a workplace focused on countering racism, to explore how Islamophobia manifests between people in spaces that claim to be socially inclusive.
Taking an approach which recognizes the traumatic impact of Islamophobia on its victims as well as how trauma plays a role in motivating the actions of perpetrators and bystanders of Islamophobia, this workshop will give participants practical tools to unpack the assumptions and fears that underpin the dynamics of Islamophobia between people in "inclusive" & "progressive" spaces.
This workshop is specifically designed to address concerns and conflicts that may arise in spaces that aim to be inclusive of both 2SLGBTQI+ communities and Muslim communities by providing a space for honest discussion and practical problem-solving.
Chelby Marie Daigle is the editor in chief of Muslim Link, an online hub for Muslims in Canada and the author of the report "Addressing Anti-Black Racism in Ottawa". She is also an equity, diversity, inclusion, and anti-oppression educator who speaks and delivers workshops on subjects such as Islamophobia, navigating Muslim communities, anti-Black racism, classism, living with mental illness, and the mental health impact of experiencing individual and systemic discrimination. She is the winner of a 2016 "Femmy" Award for her intersectional feminist activism.
