A workshop for parents of Black children on supporting positive mental health for Black children in the school system.Parents for Diversity, in partnership with Everett Lawrence Adams II (E. L.), present a workshop for parents of Black children on supporting the mental health of Black children in schools.COST: FREEAs a parent, you will have the opportunity to explore the following topics with a registered psychologist that identifies as Black Canadian and specializes in race-related issues and trauma. This workshop will examine anti-Black racism within the education system, how Black students experience racism, how it can impact their experience in school and how it can impact their mental health. We understand at P4D that it can sometimes feel lonely being the “only one” observing these experiences of inequity, and hearing the common response that "it’s not racism" by others. The mental health impact of anti-Black racism on students - the psychological impact it has on Black students e.g. cultural paranoia, poor self-image etc., greatly impacts their ability to learn to their full potential. In this workshop, we will also be discussing tools and strategies we can use to support the mental health of Black children. Please note that in order to ensure a safe space for parents, this workshop is only open to parents of children of African, Black or Caribbean descent, and to community organizers working with families of African, Black or Caribbean descent. * Coffee and light refreshments will be served.** Due to limited capacity, we are unable to provide childcare during this workshop.*** Please indicate if you require accommodations, including, but not limited, to prayer space and ASL translation. The PSAC Building is an accessible building, and free parking is available on site. The nearest OC Transpo Bus Stop is Elgin/Gilmour 2469 and Elgin/Lewis 7673.Parents for Diversity is a collective of parents committed to achieving inclusive and non-discriminatory learning environments that allow children to fulfill their true potential in this world. We advocate for schools and families to promote diversity and inclusion and to take meaningful steps to address and eradicate discrimination and bias.
