Sanad Collective is an Ottawa-based collective of community members who seek to facilitate learning environments, spiritual gatherings, and a platform for community initiatives.
Our Vision is to provide sustained opportunities for people to pursue knowledge (ʿilm), practice self-refinement (tazkiyah), and engage in community outreach (daʿwah).
Sanad Collective understands knowledge as being that which is passed from teacher to student in a chain that goes back to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Sanad Collective is also centered on self-refinement in the path to God: taking our faith to ever-deeper levels of personal growth. In addition to this internal work, Sanad Collective strives to serve the broader community, to step up and to provide for its needs where possible, and to be a bridge-building force amongst its members. We aim to have accessible and family-oriented spaces, which can benefit anyone from our community.
Our Mission is to express the goals of seeking knowledge, practicing self-refinement, and engaging in outreach through the provision of circles of knowledge, gatherings of remembrance (dhikr), and working together towards common goals and supporting one another’s journeys (soḥba). A main component of these initiatives is to benefit from local teachers, as well as host scholars from the neighbouring regions and from abroad.
At this time, Sanad Collective’s main fulltime teacher, Shaykh Hamdi Ben Aissa, who has studied in Tunisia, Syria and the prestigious Dar al-Musṭafa in Tarīm, Yemen, is a link in this chain of traditional knowledge, and offers to pass it on through a variety of classes and halaqas offered on a weekly basis.
