Sadaqa Food Bank is a community initiative launched in September 2007. We are a grass roots organization, run primarily on the steam of dedicated community volunteers. The idea is to give food instead of cash to needy families to help them avoid the misuse of the cash. We are the only food bank in the city operating on weekends and the only Halal food bank in Ottawa.
No food bank in Ottawa serves food packages sensitive to the specific needs of Muslim culture. The Sadaqa Food Bank *ONLY* provides free food items in accordance with Islamic dietary practices, to clients irrespective of any religion, ethnicity or race. This means that all food items contain no pig or pork products, are alcohol free, and that all meat is "zabiha" (Islamically slaughtered). If we receive any donated food items which do not meet our halal criteria we send it to Ottawa Food Bank.
According to the Ottawa food bank, the SFB is classified as one of a handful of X-large food banks in the city serving over 1000 individuals every month. We are proud to play a significant role in helping the city fight hunger.
The ICNA Relief Food Banks are a community-supported project, completely dependent on donations of cash and non-perishable foods. With the support of local community groups, grocery stores, and caring individuals like you, we can organize food collection drives throughout the year to keep our Food Bank well-stocked and open to those in need.
