Developments in Literacy (DIL) is a not-for-profit global agency that is dedicated to providing education to disadvantaged children.
Organizations like DIL were created as an alternative to Pakistani Government schools, which are often under staffed and poorly managed. Pakistan has the lowest primary school enrollment in South Asia and spends only 2.6 % of its GDP on education – a fact that is clearly reflected in the state of its schools.
At DIL, we believe that education trickles over into all aspects of a young girls life. When you educate a young girl you change her future and the future of her family. We call this the ripple effect.
What we’ve accomplished
At DIL Canada we’ve made a BIG impact over the years. These are some of the things that we’re most proud of:
Our schools are community-owned and have a village education committee that provides support to teachers and ensures the community’s involvement and oversight.
Teacher Development Centre
Our Teacher Development Center works directly with rural teachers to improve their teaching skills. We collaborate with the teachers when developing lesson plans and teaching materials to ensure that their needs are fully met.
All DIL students develop knowledge and understanding through engaging activities that help to nurture their creativity and critical thinking skills.
Low Dropout Rate
The average student dropout rate for DIL schools in 2009 was only 2.5 percent, an enormous success considering the national dropout rate in Pakistan is 45 percent.
We take great pride in our school monitoring system and have always maintained complete financial transparency.
Independent monitors are hired for evaluation purposes and are required to make quarterly trips to project sites during the year. The monitoring involves testing of students and teachers as well as interviewing the parents and community members to determine the overall progress made by the schools.
All DIL Canada accounts are audited annually by reputable accounting firms both in the US and Pakistan.
