The Parent Resource Centre’s In-home Parent Support Worker provides in-person services at the home of the client and/or virtual services as required.

Specific education and supports provided are trauma informed and tailored to the needs of the client.

Reporting to the Family Resilience Program Manager, the In-home Parent Support Worker provides competent and empathetic services to vulnerable parents and their families. The Parent Resource Centre’s In-home Parent Support Worker provides in-person services at the home of the client and/or virtual services as required. Specific education and supports provided are trauma informed and tailored to the needs of the client.

Key Responsibilities:

Client support and community engagement

  • Coordinates services with the Family Resilience Program Manager.
  • Completes general intakes for In-home parenting support service(s) and parenting groups.
  • Provides one-to-one parent education, life-skills support, and community referrals.
  • Develops and implements practical strategies with parents based on their parenting goals.
  • Responds to and supports parents through crisis situations.
  • Advocates on behalf of parents. This includes attending appointments with parents and other service providers such as CAS and schools.
  • Prepares resource materials for clients as needed.
  • Assists with preparation for support groups and community events.
  • Attends community meetings to gather and share information specific to parenting education and support.
  • Helps coordinate distribution of non-monetary donations received from the community.
  • Attends events to promote the Family Resilience Program and PRC services to individuals and agencies/businesses
  • Is part of the rotation to answer Parent Support Phone Line and follow up as required.

Administration

  • Discusses case planning and concerns with FRP Program Manager.
  • Keeps up-to-date client files using approved template and procedures
  • Prepares reports, maintains documentation and statistical records
  • Attends team meetings

  • Superior communication and listening skills and ability to demonstrate understanding
  • Demonstrates ability to work in an emotionally challenging environment
  • Strong advocacy and conflict resolution skills
  • Highly organized, and able to multi-task and effectively prioritize
  • Demonstrates ability to anticipate problems and proactively develop solutions
  • Ability to work independently and effectively as part of a small team
  • Demonstrates understanding of the diverse needs of vulnerable families facing multiple risks and barriers
  • Demonstrates a solid understanding of anti-racism, equity, diversity and inclusion
  • Establishes effective community relations relevant to the program
  • Group facilitation skills (an asset)
  • Counselling skills (an asset)
  • Proven ability to deal with sensitive and personal information in a confidential manner

Requirements and Qualifications:

  • Post secondary education in social work, social sciences, or an acceptable combination of education, training and experience
  • Minimum 3 years of front-line experience working in social services
  • Valid driver’s licence and access to a vehicle required
  • Recent “Vulnerable Person Sector Police Check” prior to starting employment
  • Superior knowledge of child development and positive parenting strategies
  • Understanding of the impact of trauma on child development and parenting
  • Strong knowledge of community resources available for parents and families, as well as for clients with diverse values and beliefs
  • Experience in using and maintaining record keeping systems
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office, with a proficiency in Word, Power Point, Excel, Outlook and virtual platforms (e.g. Zoom, Microsoft Teams)
  • Familiar/experience with the Children’s Aid Society’s processes and services (Asset)
  • Certification in or strong knowledge of Attachment, Collaborative Problem Solving, Circle of Security parenting (Asset)
