Saint Vincent Hospital's bright multi-faith room was brimming with joyful activity during the Second Annual Eid Celebration, coordinated by the Spiritual Care Services of the Bruyere Continuing Care Centre, in partnership with members of the Muslim community.

Several patients were joined by several dozen family and community members to celebrate the end of Ramadan with prayer, music, treats and gifts on Wednesday, August 14.

“To be Catholic is to be universal, patients, families, employees and volunteers of all faiths are welcome at Bruyere Continuing Care,” Louise Charbonneau, Coordinator of Religious Services, told the group. “Today we gather to celebrate with our patients and families, employees and volunteers of the Muslim faith.”

Family members and their loved ones were delighted with the obvious care and attention offered to them by Religious Services during this special celebration.

“It means so much to our family to be able to celebrate this important occasion with other Muslim patients, as well as hospital staff and volunteers.  This is what diversity is all about, and what our faiths truly teach, to embrace one another in mutual respect and love,” said Amira Elghawaby, whose mother, Mona, has lived at the hospital since 1996.

“The community response has also been incredible. Whether it's been putting up decorations, purchasing gifts for each of the 11 Muslim patients here, or making delicious foods, everyone has played an important role.”

Bernie Blais, president and CEO of Bruyere Continuing Care, joined in the festivities, as well, greeting patients, family members and staff.
