Statistics Canada Releases Infographic on Muslim Population in Canada

On December 16, 2024, Statistics Canada released an infographic exploring the demographics of the Muslim population in Canada.

This infographic was created in collaboration with the Office for the Special Representative on Combatting Islamophobia.

Some key information highlighted:

From 2001 to 2021 the proportion of Muslims in the Canadian population more than doubled rising from 2.0% to 4.9%

.

In 2021, the Muslim population was relatively young, with a median age of 30, compared with a median age of 41 for the total Canadian population.

47.3% of the Muslim population speak English most often at home

29.5% of the Muslim population were born in Canada

In 2021, South Asian was the largest racialized group among the Muslim population, making up 37.6% of the Muslim population, the Arab community make up 32.2% of the Muslim population, the West Asian (ie Iran) community make up 13% of the Muslim population, and the Black community make up 11.6% of the Muslim population.

In this infographic, 'Muslim', includes respondents who, in the question on religious affiliation in the Census of Population, reported Muslim, Ahmadi Muslim, Ibadi Muslim, Shi'a Muslim, Sunni Muslim or another Muslim affiliation.
