This past Friday, Kanata Muslim Association hosted a Community Solidarity Event in response to the recent hate-motivated attack on a young Muslim sister aboard an OC Transpo bus.

The event featured remarks from Mayor Mark Sutcliffe, MP Jenna Sudds, MPP Karen McCrimmon, Deputy Police Chief Paul Burnett, Rev. Doug Kendall of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Canada’s Special Representative on Combatting Islamophobia Sr. Amira Elghawaby, Dr. Aisha Sherazi on behalf of the victim's family, NCCM representative Ahmad Al Qadi, and Imam Sikander. We thank all of them for joining us and lending their voices of support.

Most importantly, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to our neighbours and community members - estimated to be more than 500 in attendance - who came out in large numbers to stand in solidarity. Your presence sent a powerful message against hate and in support of safety for all.

.

Ottawa Police have since arrested and charged the suspect in this case. We thank the Ottawa Police Service for their work and ongoing efforts to ensure the safety of our community.

KMA continues to work closely on this case, and we will keep the community updated as developments unfold, Insha Allah.
