On January 29, 2017 a gunman entered Centre Culturel Islamique de Québec during evening prayer with the intention of massacring everyone within the building.

This act of hatred resulted in the murder of Ibrahima Barry, Mamadou Tanou Barry, Khaled Belkacemi, Abdelkrim Hassane, Azzedine Soufiane, and Aboubaker Thabti and serious injury and long-term disability to other mosque members.

In 2021, the Canadian government designated January 29 as a National Day of Remembrance of the Quebec City Mosque Attack and Action Against Islamophobia as a way of commemorating the terrorist attack.
