National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM)'s Statement on the Dissolution of the Offices on Islamophobia and Anti-Semitism
Written by National Council of Canadian MuslimsFebruary 4th, 2026 (Ottawa, Ontario) — The National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM) is deeply disappointed by the Federal government’s decision to dissolve the Office of the Special Representative on Combatting Islamophobia.
This office came to life after the tragic terrorist attack that took the lives of four members of a London family.
Since then, we’ve continued to see the rise of Islamophobia across Canada. The Canadian Muslim community deserves sustained and dedicated leadership. We are similarly concerned by the dissolution of the Office on Combating Antisemitism, at a time when hate is on the rise.
"We extend our sincere thanks to Amira Elghawaby for her exemplary and tireless service and advocacy for our community," says NCCM CEO Stephen Brown.
While an Advisory Council on Rights, Equality and Inclusion is being created in lieu of these offices, we will continue our work on combatting Islamophobia. We look forward to working with the Prime Minister and monitoring the work of this new office to ensure that this important work continues.
