Today, we mark the one-year anniversary of the Islamophobic terror attack in London, Ontario that took the lives of four members of a Muslim family and left one child seriously injured. The National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM) is convening Canadian Muslim leaders from across the country to gather in Ottawa on June 6th to advocate for change to address Islamophobia and hate crimes in this country.

“Our London Family was taken from us on June 6th last year simply because of their Muslim identity and faith. We have so much work to do. Incidents of Islamophobia continue to damage communities across our country. Hate crimes continue to climb in number. Canada is now the leader among G-7 countries in Islamophobia related deaths. That is why this June 6th, NCCM is leading a full day of advocacy against systemic Islamophobia, racism, and hate on Parliament Hill,” said Mustafa Farooq, CEO of NCCM.

Over a hundred delegates from across Canada will participate in advocating for better laws and policies to address hate crimes, racism, and Islamophobia.

“Right after the deaths of Our London Family, elected leaders across all parties made promises to fight Islamophobia. It was the right step to take. Many things have been accomplished in the past year but we still have a long way to go. There is much, much more to do. We will bring this message to the dozens of Members of Parliament who must honour their commitment to fighting for unity and against hate in Canada,” said Fatema Abdalla, NCCM Communications Coordinator.

The NCCM day of advocacy on the Hill will be followed by a walk against Islamophobia to commemorate the memory of Our London family at 7:15PM on June 6 starting at the Centennial Fire on Parliament Hill.

The NCCM is an independent, non-partisan and non-profit organization that is a leading voice for civic engagement and the promotion of human rights.
