Edmonton – As a part of the Extreme Weather Response activation, the Al Rashid Mosque will reactivate its winter shelter and open its doors to provide a safe and warm space for Edmonton’s most vulnerable citizens.

The activation of Al Rashid’s shelter takes effect on Saturday, January 28, 2023, and will end on Tuesday, January 31, 2023, and will be open from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 am. This initiative is with the support of the City of Edmonton. The “Mosque will keep its doors open as long as an extreme weather warning is in effect and temperatures remain dangerously low.

In addition to shelter space, guests will be offered meals, clothing, and basic necessities to stay safe and warm. Staff and volunteers will be available onsite overnight to provide any additional support that guests may require. Imam Sadique Pathan, the Al Rashid Mosque Outreach Imam stated “Being caring and compassionate is essential in a Muslim’s character. A person who treats others kindly and thinks well of them well will be rewarded with God’s generosity. We welcome people in need and treat them as guests, we need to take care of others and lend a helping hand whenever possible”

.

"We appreciate the opportunity to open our doors for Edmonton's vulnerable citizens during this time of need; and we are very grateful for all the support so many other organizations and the community at large have shown throughout our last activation in providing food, hygiene products and so much more!" – Citra Ahmed, Social Services Coordinator

We urge all citizens around Edmonton and the Mosque area to direct any individuals in need of shelter to the Al Rashid Mosque. Additional assistance and transportation to the nearest shelters are available by calling 211.
