The Office of the Special Representative on Combatting Islamophobia, the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe’s (OSCE) Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR), the Canadian Race Relations Foundation, the Canadian Commission for UNESCO, and the Federal Anti-Racism Secretariat are pleased to announce an in-person event to launch the Anti-Muslim Hate Crimes: Addressing the Security Needs of Muslim Communities A Practical Guide.

Racism and Racial Discrimination continues to be one of the biggest threats to Canada as it manifests itself in various forms impacting all spheres of social and economic activities in our society. In particular, hate reported crimes that are motivated by bias tend to carry a message; a message that a community and its members are neither wanted nor welcome and therefore violence and threats will continue to oppress these communities.

Muslim communities have experienced a 71% increase in police-reported hate crimes between 2021 and 2022. In the past few years, we have been witness to countless violent incidents of hate against Muslims across the country. A coordinated effort is needed to address this problem. Launched in eight countries across Europe and translated into 10 languages, the guide can be an essential tool for law enforcement, public safety officials, policy makers, and others who are committed to strengthening their processes and policies to address hate against Muslim communities in Canada.

Join us virtually for this hybrid event that will include an in-depth overview of the guide led by its authors, followed by a panel discussion to reflect on its impact in Canada.
