SpeakSudan is a youth-led, youth-serving organization serving East African and Afrodiasporic youth in the GTA.
We were formed out of a love for our communities, and a desire to engage with youth using arts-based community building approach. Established in 2012, SpeakSudan has engaged over 3000 youth in our arts, community and capacity building programming, produced two arts publications, an original theater production, hosted over 40 workshops, and 6 performance events with an attendance of 4000 community members.
SpeakSudan is entirely volunteer run and provides accessible programming from a queer positive, anti-racist, gender aware, anti-ableist framework which respects all members of our community. SpeakSudan’s work aims to address the issues impacting East African and black youth as a whole including poverty, mental health, access to arts and community programming, racism, sexism, homophobia and ableism along with issues within our communities that divide us along shade, creed, gender, sexuality, religion, ethnicity and beyond.
Our goal is to provide a safe space, rooted in artistic practices and self-care principles for youth to creatively address the issues that impact our communities and provide meaningful opportunities for artists to connect with one another, improve their work and share their work with the community.
