Nisa Homes Ottawa is a Muslim women's shelter based in Ottawa which opens it's doors on April 1, 2021 right at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.

As a young person caught in the devastation of war – or maybe because of that – Semira Saba Kifle dreamed of becoming a nurse. She realized that dream, graduating from the Algonquin College Practical Nursing diploma program in 2018, after 18 years as a Personal Support Worker (PSW).

My name is Sidra Ali-Khan. My mother, Farah Ali, has liver cancer and is in danger of liver failure. Farah is a mother, grandmother and wife. She was put on the transplant list for a deceased donor in June. However, because of the long wait list and limited number of livers available, we are looking for a living liver donor with blood type O+ or O-, to donate.

The COVID-19 pandemic has challenged the social fabric of our communities by exposing how some of the most important members of our community, for example the working poor and elderly, are disproportionately affected and made vulnerable by the pandemic’s effects. However, throughout this challenging time, we have also seen how the strength of our faith communities has brought hope and relief to those most impacted by this virus. Faith leaders and faith communities are playing a crucial role in providing essential services to people in terms of food, shelter, medical supplies, companionship and counselling during the COVID-19 pandemic.
