Calgary - November 17, 2023

Today, [the National Council of Canadian Muslims] were informed by our counsel that the Crown has decided to stay proceedings against a Calgary protestor, Wesam Cooley, who chanted "From the River to the Sea, Palestine Will Be Free".

The Crown made the right decision to stay these proceedings. The underlying charge had no merit, and would not have held up in a court of law. We remain greatly concerned about why the charges were filed in the first place by Calgary Police.

.

We will continue to ensure that the right to peaceful protest remains protected, including in standing up for the human rights and dignity of the Palestinian people.

We specifically thank counsel, Zachary Al Khatib, for Liberty Law LLP, for his excellent work in this case.
