Canadian Muslim Lawyers Association (CMLA) Statement on Keffiyeh Ban at Ontario Legislature

The Canadian Muslim Lawyers Association (CMLA) has issued a formal request to implore Hon. Ted Arnott (Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario) to reverse his recent decision to ban the Keffiyeh, a traditional Arab headdress, at the Ontario Legislature.

We are appalled that this ban resulted in our colleagues, from the Arab Canadian Lawyers Association, being removed from the Legislature.

The Keffiyeh is more than a political statement; it is a symbol deeply rooted in Arab culture and solidarity. By effecting this ban, the Legislature silences voices and support for oppressed people and is a prime example of anti-Palestinian racism. This discriminatory decision perpetuates harmful stereotypes while undermining principles of human rights legislation, including religious freedom and cultural expression.

.

The CMLA reaffirms its commitment to advocating for the rights of individuals to freely express their beliefs without fear of discrimination or persecution. We and in solidarity with all those who oppose this unjust ban and remain steadfast in our pursuit of a more just, equitable, and inclusive society for all.
